BA (Hons) Fine Art: Sculpture
I explore spaces and objects that are often over looked, by caring for them I hope to entice other people to share the same regard for the place or object I have found. Through my work I consider material, form and aesthetic through simple pared down structures and use of industrial material. There is a sense of care and intimacy for the materials selected. The gesture of hand polishing the surface of a rusted I beam to such a degree that the utility of the beam is forgotten, an unnecessary intimacy with a material that is often hidden from view. In doing this I am attempting to change the materials identity for re-examination. The intimacy in my work comes from scale, small maquettes lead onto sculptures that can be lifted by one person or are human proportion. These works come from translating architectural spaces. These architectural spaces intrigue me; by transforming and translating them into sculpture I able to understand the space better. Often the transformation means a reduction in scale, which enables interaction with the sculpture on an intimate level, which may change the interaction with the original space or object.
