MA Fashion Footwear
My final collection is themed 'War of the Banks' and explores the protective qualities of a formal menswear. It has recently been 'Highly Commended' at the prestigious Drapers Footwear Awards and shortlisted for the International IHDA and ITS#8 competitions. Research into modern financial institutions identified them as direct inheritors of the feudal system, the new 'Knights in Shining Armor'. By juxtaposing patterns and referencing surface decoration, the pieces draw parallels between formal footwear and medieval armor. Traditional shoemaking and intaglio techniques were employed alongside modern laser etching to create pieces of timeless elegance. The four animals used on the shoes (the Horse, Eagle, Griffin and Deer) are references to the UK banks' original heraldry. Before enrolling on the Masters Footwear course I have completed a BA in Product Design and Development (Footwear pathway) at Cordwainers, a Diploma in Industrial Studies and a Graphic Design Summer School at Central St. Martins. I have also undertaken varied footwear work placements (e.g. at Vivienne Westwood ) and collaborations (Grayson Perry). My final work would not have been possible without the support of the English Eccentrics and the EOD.
